a series of brief musical tastings

a taste of tHE MUSIC MIND

From * the music mind experience * by karl berger

So the first thing to realize is that this sense of flow is natural to us. That is how we come into this world. When we were kids, we just played. It was intuitive. We were fully present in the moment. We still have that sense of intuitive flow—it is actually our natural way. We “play” music. (Bruce Springsteen was once asked in an interview how his work was going. He replied, “We musicians don’t work; we play.”)

Flow is not something we can fabricate. Flow is our natural state of mind. All we need to do is get out of the way and let it happen. Flow is already there for us to embrace. However, it takes trust and confidence to do so. As kids, we have that trust and confidence in abundance. As adults, we are too worried something might go wrong. We are no longer so confident. We don’t trust our intuition quite as much.
