CMS Workshops

In the 1970s and 1980s, CMS was renowned for its legendary “workshop intensives,” featuring hundreds of Guiding Artists. In 2013, after a decades-long hiatus offering these workshops, CMS began offering workshop intensives to professional and amateur musicians, adults interested in lifelong learning, and even to fans of the music, who don’t play an instrument at all. A few were dancers!
Each workshop typically features a Guiding Artist or multiple Guiding Artists and 18–25 participants. Workshops are challenging, energizing, exhausting, inspirational, frustrating, fun, insightful and mostly a rare opportunity to focus on music with others who share a passion for improvisation. CMS Workshops foster active listening, personal expression, improvisation and musical exploration. Musicians of any instrument, including voice, are welcome as are non-musicians. Adults who played music earlier in their lives can benefit from this lifelong learning opportunity that offers participants a once-in-a-lifetime experience to learn from and play with music masters, and simply spending time with them in an informal, personal setting. The non-traditional atmosphere of the Creative Music Studio Workshop encourages participants to experiment, push beyond limits, genres and categories, and to take risks.

In 2022-2023, CMS is offering workshops at the New School in Manhattan, NY and in upstate New York at the White Feather Farm (Theoria Foundation). Visit our EVENTS page for our current offerings.
